Blue Mesa Reservoir is the largest body of water in Colorado, located in Gunnison County near the town of Gunnison. It is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, managed by the National Park Service. The reservoir was created in 1966 by the construction of the Blue Mesa Dam, which impounds the Gunnison River. The reservoir is approximately 20 miles long, with 96 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 369 feet. Blue Mesa Reservoir is a popular destination for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, camping, and hiking. The reservoir is home to a variety of fish species, including rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, and lake trout. Visitors can also explore the surrounding landscape by hiking or biking on nearby trails such as the Dillon Pinnacles Trail and the Cimarron Ridge Trail. The reservoir is open year-round, but access may be limited during the winter months due to snow and ice. Additionally, there are several campgrounds and picnic areas located around the reservoir, as well as boat ramps and fishing piers for visitors to access the water.
